This is a meaningless question the way it is phrased. A developmental disability is one that begins prior to attaining the age of 22. It can be any kind of disability – blindness, deafness, cognitive, psychiatric, physical….it can be a person with multiple disabilities that means they are extremely restricted in what activities they can participate in – or it could be a minor disability where they could participate in anything. Pick any activity at all and it will be good for someone with a developmental disability.
Most people might understand Developmental Disabilities the way you go Just me in this World, but they would be wrong. If this is a homework question it should be answered intelligently. Chilis is right – it relates to the age a person gets their disability and has nothing to do with what kind of disability they have. So they could have any disability. A person who is born blind and is a genius has a developmental disability. A person who has a car accident when they are 16 and becomes paralyzed and was not stupid or smart is developmentally disabled. A person who has a high fever when they are six months old and develops mental retardation is developmentally disabled. If you get a disability when you are a child or teenager you get a developmental disability. So you can enjoy all kinds of programs or activities.
WHile many people think that a developmental disability is any disability before the age of 22–they are WRONG–the disability must meet certain criteria—–I’ve listed them and added the links below–so I am not the one that is wrong–Chili and Silly are
most people understand that developmental disabilities means someone who is cognitvely impaired and has academic achievement and cognition of the average person significantly younger..
basically–anything an average person enjoys–to a degree–they might need supports or modifications..
gardening is good, many go bowling–walk through the park, listening to music, going to the movies, shopping, going to the beach–
may be less interested/able to go to the casinos/bars—but may enjoy an adult drink….
Developmental disability is a term used to describe life-long disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical or combination of mental and physical impairments, manifested prior to age twenty-two. The term is used most commonly in the United States to refer to disabilities affecting daily functioning in three or more of the following areas:
capacity for independent living
economic self-sufficiency
learning
mobility
receptive and expressive language
self-care
self-direction
So a BLIND GENIUS woudl not really fit the definition–as their mobility is mildly affected-most have independent mobility—and learning is mildly affected–as they need to use alternative methods–
this is from the US Government definitionhttp://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/add/adda…
What is a Developmental Disability?
Developmental Disabilities are physical or mental impairments that begin before age 22, and alter or substantially inhibit a person’s capacity to do at least three of the following:
Take care of themselves (dress, bathe, eat, and other daily tasks)
Speak and be understood clearly
Learn
Walk/ Move around
Make decisions
Live on their own
Earn and manage an income
Since people who are blind or deaf generally only meet the standard of ‘altering’ 1 or 2 out of 7 standards–most do not meet the definition of developmental disability
